Abstract This study analyzed aquatic chemistry and stable sulfur isotope composition for 9 brine samples collected from Tertiary and Quaternary strata of the western Qaidam basin. It was found that oilfield brine samples enriched Ca2+,depleted Mg2+、SO42-,and presented the characteristics of CaCl2 type brine, and that the δ34S values of brine correlated with the aquatic chemistry type and SO42- content of salt lakes. In the sulfate type salt lake,δ34S values of brine positively correlated with the SO42- content. In the chloride type salt lake,δ34S values of brine were lower than those of the sulfate type salt lake. The oilfield brine had obviously positive δ34S values(ranging from 26.46‰ to 54.57‰) compared with those of the salt lake brine, indicating the effects of the hydrocarbon involving reduction process or the microbiologic reduction process. It is the reduction process of sulfate that changed the aquatic chemistry characteristics of brine during its evolution to deposit a large amount of the chloride type brine. This process is the fundamental step of forming liquid potash ores in China.
